Blogging for "Filipina" Advocacy

Multi-awarded blogger Noemi Dado believes that blogs and other user-generated content are the latest tool for communication today and can be an effective tool for advocacy. "Blogs enhance social online networking, where a campaign can be generated exponentially through a limitless number of ways well, limited only by the number of bloggers who are willing to write about it, and then link to each other and generate a buzz. A blog should bring a positive tone and quality that aims to engage bloggers in long term community and change, and only then will it be effective."

Blogs have played an important role to the success of the Filipina Image campaign and contributes to the growing number of Filipina content available online today. Although Noemi admitted that Filipina content is not easy to measure . "What is measurable is the search engine page results (SERPs) of the keyword "Filipina". Based on findings of Philippines and USA Google SERPs, the sites that we wanted to rank has made it to the first page of the SERPs. When we renewed the Uplifting the Filipina Timeless Campaign (the Filipina campaign existed as early as 1998) in August 2007 and renamed it "Reshaping the Filipina Image Online", the first 10 sites showed only dating sites. Two months after, filipinaimages.com already showed in the first 5 sites of Google SERPs in the keyword results of "Filipina"."

Noemi encourages bloggers and even non-bloggers to contribute to the Filipina Campaign. "Even if they have already blogged about the Filipina. We need fresh content all the time. Second, Link to FilipinaImages.com. Turn every mention of the word "Filipina" into a link. Third, If you are a woman of Filipino descent, be proud to be a Filipina. Identify yourself as a Filipina and not just as a "Filipino" or "Filipino woman" on your blog or website. If you don't own a blog or website, encourage those with blogs or websites to join the Filipina campaign."

"We still have a long way to go. Google SERPs in Europe does not show FilipinaImages.com in the first page. Same with MSN and other search engines."

Filipina Vlogger Christine "Happy Slip" Gambito visits the Philippines

When news came that the famous Filipina vlogger, Christine Gambito, famously known as Happy Slip, will be visiting the country, a lot of fans here and abroad were excited. This is her 1st time (or 2nd) to visit the Philippines as she got invited by the Department of Tourism.

During her two weeks stay in the country, she'll be visiting Bohol, Cebu, Palawan, Tagaytay, Boracay, and other locations. She will also be in a meet & greet session on February 7.

Christine is indeed an inspiration to Filipino bloggers and vloggers. May this open more opportunities for the country to be recognized as an exciting place to visit.

I am a Filipina!

Vonjobi's effort to change search engine's mining of Filipina is gradually paying off. It now even has a logo contributed by Jonas Diego.



I am partly embarrassed by this whole discussion. For one, I don't refer to myself as a Filipina but a Filipino especially when I achieve a feat that is truly a first, regardless of gender. I guess I have to refer to myself more as a Filipino/Filipina hereon.

Perhaps, the reason for that attitude as well is that the feat achieved had nothing to do with me being a Filipina or woman. As I become more gender sensitive, perhaps my outlook will change in the long run.

What is a Filipina?

In the iBlog site, there's a great appeal ongoing that encourages each and every blogger to populate their blog as to what a Filipina is all about. This is to populate search engines results with relevant content that truly depicts what a Filipina is all about.

A Filipina is a Filipino lady or woman. More than half of the country's population is composed of Filipinas. You can find her in almost every profession. Overseas, she can also be found working in various services industry.

A young Filipina lady is often assumed to be having her own career or take care of her family as she reaches maturity. This mindset has left many Filipinas unprepared to take on the challenge of possibly becoming an entrepreneur. However, I hope this will change in the near future as more and more schools are integrating entrepreneurship in their courses.

As the Philippines is very much gender neutral, every Philippine resident, regardless of gender is often referred to as a Filipino. I noticed that a lady is only referred to as a Filipina whenever she gets featured or recognized in events, publications, and awards.

Perhaps this is the reason why there's not much content specifically referring to Filipinas. This is also where women publications in the country should take the challenge of taking their content online and populate search engines as to what Filipinas are truly all about. More than just mail-order brides and the likes... ayayay!
